PROPOPSYCHOGANDA!

A group of eight Workman Arts artists working in collaboration with poet in residence Bill Bissett have been commissioned to create an outdoor street banner project presenting messages of purposeful persuasion relating to issues of mental illness and addiction for Toronto’s CONTACT Photography Festival May 1-31, 2010. Responding to the 2010 festival theme Pervasive Influence in honour of the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Marshall McLuhan, PROPSYCHOGANDA! is created in the tradition of Artists’ Billboards which have been a key medium or vehicle to explore and express the ideas and strategies behind the most important art movements over the last fifty years. The banners will be installed in front of CAMH along the south side of Queen Street West between Shaw St and Dovercourt.

BEING SCENE 10th Year Annual Juried Art Exhibition

BEING SCENE is an annual juried exhibition produced by Workman Arts in partnership with the Center for Addiction and Mental Health. The mandate of BEING SCENE is to introduce the general public to the work of artists who have lived experience with mental illness and addiction while presenting a cross-cultural portrait of the healing power of art. Since its inception in 2000 BEING SCENE has partnered with some of Toronto’s leading artistic and cultural figures, galleries, and institutions. Over the years BEING SCENE has evolved to occupy a significant role in Toronto’s cultural landscape, and work originally exhibited on primarily CAMH grounds has gone on to hang at other venues such as the Lieutenant Governor’s Suite at Queen’s Park in Toronto, and the National Art Centre in Ottawa.

BUSK A MOVE

Busk-A-Move is a monthly program created to give musicians who have received mental health services through The Centre for Addictions and Mental Health (CAMH) the opportunity to perform and to be paid an honorarium for their work.

Musicians perform a range of pop and classical songs within various spots of CAMH during lunchtimes to add some entertainment to a busy working day. Our artists are accomplished musicians playing a range of instrumental pieces as well as singing their own compositions. Musicians from the Busk-A-Move program are available to be hired to enhance any event that you might be planning. Contact Alison Dengate for further information.

MEMBER ARTIST SHOWCASE

We will be launching our first member showcase series beginning in the summer this year. In our grandiose theatre, we will be offering open presentations to the wider community, providing an opportunity where our artists can present their own work in development. There will a variety of acts such as singing, poetry, monologues, stand up comedy, improvising and music troupe performances. Keep an eye out for further information and scheduling.
